CASE STUDY

Tree Removal Wentworth Estate, Northern Surrey

Wentworth roads committee contacted Tree Marshalls Ltd to quote for the removal of a roadside pine tree. This pine tree has suffered with the attack of great spruce bark beetle and Dothistroma Needle Blight.

Dothistroma Needle Blight is most visible in June and July. The needles become yellow and tan- coloured. It is a fungus, and it causes premature needle drop. When it is severe it can cause the tree to die. Alongside the Dothistroma Needle Blight the pine tree had been damaged by the great spruce bark beetle which tunnels into the bark. The female beetle bores into the tree to lay her eggs. The tree then responds by producing resin tubes.

Due to this being a roadside job, we had to have chapter 8 barriers always set up and work within the excluded zone. Chapter 8 barriers are temporary traffic management measures that are used to create safe exclusion zones in roadside work areas. These barriers are designed to protect workers, pedestrians, and passing traffic from potential hazards that may arise from ongoing road works. The exclusion zone is a designated area that is cordoned off using the barriers, and it serves to keep everyone within the area safe from harm.

We started off by putting our climber up into the tree using our Cherry Picker. Then we began rigging the tree down section by section, we used specialist rigging techniques. This process required a lot of concentration and coordination between our team members. We had to carefully plan out each step, ensuring the safety of both our team and the potential pedestrians/vehicles moving nearby. As we worked our way down, we were cautious by minimizing any potential damage to the surrounding area.

When the tree was at sensible height, we used our Cherry Picker to then rig down the large bits of the stem. Branches were chipped and removed from the site, and then loaded into the back of the van. Our director organised a grab lorry to pick up the wood. This was to save our team lifting any heavy sections of wood which may cause damage.

Before we could stump grind, we used a CAT scan to enable us to find where underground electrical services were lying. This zone was then able to mark this out with cones. We then proceeded with stump grinding cautiously. Stump grinding is an essential process in removing tree stumps that are left behind after a tree has been cut down. This process involves the use of a machine that grinds the stump into small wood chips. The wood chips can be used as mulch or can be removed from the site.
