Tree Management Works at Gatwick Immigration Centre

Project Overview

Location

Gatwick, West Sussex

Client Type

Commercial Client

Project Type

Tree Maintenance & Ash Dieback Removal

Objective

Remove diseased ash trees affected by ash dieback and cut back overhanging branches to maintain safe clearance along the boundary fence of the Immigration Centre.

Tree Marshalls were instructed to carry out essential tree works along the boundary of the Gatwick Immigration Centre. The site required professional tree management to address several ash trees suffering from ash dieback, while also ensuring that overhanging branches were cut back to provide adequate clearance from the perimeter fencing.

Due to the nature of the site and the proximity of the trees to the boundary, the work required careful planning and the use of specialist equipment to ensure it could be completed safely and efficiently.

Project Scope

The project involved a combination of tree removal and pruning works to improve safety and maintain the site’s boundary infrastructure.

Key work carried out during the project included:

Removal of ash trees affected by ash dieback that had become structurally compromised and posed a potential risk to the surrounding area.

Crown reduction and branch removal to cut back overhanging limbs encroaching on the boundary fence.

Boundary clearance works to create suitable separation between the trees and perimeter fencing.

Use of specialist access equipment to safely undertake work at height and improve efficiency across the site.

To complete the works effectively, our team utilised a professional cherry picker, allowing safe access to the affected trees while minimising disruption to the site.

Challenges

Working on commercial and secure sites often presents additional logistical and safety considerations.

Key challenges on this project included:

Trees affected by ash dieback: Diseased ash trees can become brittle and unstable, requiring careful dismantling techniques to ensure safe removal.

Boundary fence clearance: Overhanging branches needed to be removed without causing damage to the perimeter infrastructure.

Working at height: The location and condition of the trees required specialist access equipment to complete the work safely.

Site safety requirements: As the works were carried out along the boundary of an operational immigration facility, strict safety procedures were followed throughout the project.

By combining experienced arborists with specialist machinery, Tree Marshalls successfully completed the works while maintaining a safe working environment.

Outcome

The project was completed safely and efficiently, improving both site safety and boundary management.

Key outcomes included:

Successful removal of ash trees affected by ash dieback, eliminating potential risks associated with declining tree health.

Improved fence clearance through the removal of overhanging branches.

Safe and efficient completion of works using a cherry picker for access.

Enhanced long-term site management by reducing future maintenance requirements along the boundary.

This project demonstrates Tree Marshalls’ ability to undertake specialist tree works in sensitive commercial environments, delivering safe, efficient, and professional solutions while maintaining the highest standards of arboricultural practice.
