Large-scale vegetation and tree clearance for residential development
Clear the site of invasive vegetation, small trees, and hazardous trees to prepare the land for new construction.
Our team was commissioned by a long-term developer client to carry out a full site clearance within the prestigious Wentworth Estate in Virginia Water. We have worked with this developer for over 10 years, supporting multiple projects across Surrey by providing professional tree management and land clearance services.
For this project, the site needed to be cleared of dense rhododendron growth, small trees, and several dangerous mature trees before construction work could begin. Rhododendron can spread aggressively and dominate woodland areas, making it a common obstacle during development projects. Removing it effectively requires both specialist equipment and experienced operators.
In addition to clearing the vegetation, the client also required the surrounding hedges to be carefully restored so that they could be maintained and trained into a uniform boundary hedge during the building phase.
The project involved a comprehensive clearance programme designed to prepare the land safely and efficiently for future development.
Key work carried out during the project included:
Removal of dense rhododendron growth throughout the site to prevent regrowth and allow access for construction teams.
Felling and removal of small trees across the development area.
Removal of dangerous trees that posed a safety risk during site preparation.
Use of specialist machinery to increase efficiency and minimise disruption.
To carry out the work effectively, we used a range of professional equipment:
Norcar compact loader: Used for heavy lifting, moving timber, and clearing vegetation across the site.
Tracked cherry picker: This allowed us to safely remove hazardous trees that were not safe for climbers to access, reducing risk to our team.
Tracked wood chipper: Ideal for manoeuvring through uneven ground and tight access areas while processing branches and smaller timber efficiently.
Using tracked machinery allowed us to work effectively across the terrain without causing unnecessary ground disturbance, which is particularly important within high-end residential areas like the Wentworth Estate.
Large-scale site clearance projects often involve a range of logistical and environmental challenges.
Key challenges on this project included:
Dense rhododendron coverage: The invasive shrub had spread extensively across the site, requiring systematic removal to ensure it would not quickly regrow.
Dangerous trees: Several trees were structurally unsafe to climb, meaning specialist equipment such as the tracked cherry picker was required for safe dismantling.
Restricted access areas: Parts of the site had limited access, requiring smaller tracked machinery that could move easily across uneven ground.
Protecting existing landscape features: While clearing vegetation for development, care had to be taken to preserve boundary hedges and surrounding landscape elements.
Through careful planning and the use of specialist equipment, the team was able to overcome these challenges while maintaining high safety standards.
The project was successfully completed, leaving the site fully prepared for the next phase of development.
Key outcomes included:
Complete removal of rhododendron and unwanted vegetation, opening up the site for construction work.
Safe removal of dangerous trees using specialist access equipment.
Efficient processing of timber and vegetation, reducing waste and keeping the site organised.
Minimal ground disturbance thanks to the use of tracked machinery.
Restoration and shaping of boundary hedges, allowing them to be trained into a neat and uniform hedge during the building phase.
The developer was extremely pleased with the outcome, and the cleared site allowed construction teams to move forward with the project on schedule.
This project highlights our team’s ability to deliver large-scale site clearance within high-end residential areas, combining specialist machinery, experienced arborists, and careful planning to achieve safe and efficient results.
