Dangerous Large Ash Tree with ash dieback in Ockley near Horsham, West Sussex

A local resident in Ockley Village near Horsham, West Sussex has been in touch with Tree Marshalls Ltd about their concerns regarding a large ash tree that had become dangerous due to ash dieback.

When our client made contact, a member of our experienced team of tree surgeons went to their accommodation, completed a free of charge quotation and advised them on the next best steps. On inspection, it was clear that the ash tree was suffering from ash dieback. The tree surgeon that attended, made the judgment to get a grapple saw to assist with the felling.

Ash dieback has been a growing concern across Europe. Ash dieback is a serious disease that is caused by a fungus that was classed as a new species in 2006. In 2012 the disease was first detected in the UK and affects trees of all ages. It now has led to the death of thousands of trees across woodlands in the UK.

The team at Tree Marshalls Ltd worked hard to avoid obstacles throughout the tree surgery. It is highly important that our team work safely and securely around power lines and telephone cables. Whilst on this job in Ockley near Horsham, West Sussex the team ensured communication skills were a priority to keep the grapplesaw operator always informed.

Tree Marshalls Ltd has recently had an upgrade to communication headsets. There is a wide range of arborist equipment on the market and safety protection communications are a great way to keep our team safe. Communicating between tree surgeons can be difficult and sometimes impossible, especially when heavy machinery, chippers and chainsaws are working flat out. We are now able to ensure safety through communication is always at its best to minimise any tree surgeon related injuries or accidents.

When handling the large, dangerous ash tree infested with ash dieback disease each branch would be removed, lowered and the ground team would then safely cut each branch up. Our climber then got out into the tree with a large chainsaw to cut sections off the trunk and safely lower them onto the lorry.

Ash dieback has been very prominent in our local area. The team at Tree Marshalls have worked with trees affected by ash dieback in Brighton, Chichester, Crawley, Dorking, Godalming, Guildford, Horsham, and the Surrey and West Sussex. The fungus blocks water transport in the tree. This leads to lesions in the bark, leaf loss and the dieback of the crown. It’s believed that ash dieback fungus originated in Asia and was firstly discovered in 1992 in the country of Poland.

Once Tree Marshalls Ltd had finished the climbing and removal of the ash tree, they stacked the logs in our customers field where they will be process into logs. Our customer has also made the decision for some wood to be processed into planks for use around his property.

“The team did an excellent job at taking down a large ash tree surrounded by power and telephone cable. The work was completed quickly on time and on budget.”
