Ash Tree Removal Billingshurst & Slinfold

Project Overview

Location
Billingshurst and Slinfold, Horsham, West Sussex
Project Type
Removal of two large hazardous ash trees
Objective
Removal of two large ash trees flagged as a hazard to the customer. Safely dismantle and remove both trees while working close to overhead powerlines and managing traffic through the area.

Tree Marshalls was contacted to remove two large ash trees across two sites in Billingshurst and Slinfold, near Horsham. Following an assessment, our team flagged both trees to the customer as a hazard requiring removal.

Given the trees’ size and proximity to overhead powerlines, the removal required careful planning. We brought in a lorry-mounted grapple saw to assist with the dismantling, and used temporary traffic lights to keep the surrounding roads safe throughout the works.

Project Scope

Once the trees had been flagged as a hazard, our team developed a plan to safely dismantle and remove them. Key work carried out during the project included:

Assessing both ash trees and flagging them to the customer as a hazard requiring removal.
Setting up temporary traffic lights to manage traffic safely across both sites throughout the works.
Hiring a lorry-mounted grapple saw to assist with dismantling the trees section by section.
Working carefully around overhead powerlines running close to both trees throughout the removal.

This combination of specialist machinery and experienced arborists allowed both trees to be removed safely, despite the additional hazard posed by the powerlines.

Challenges

This project presented several challenges that required careful planning.

Hazardous ash trees: Both trees had been flagged as a hazard, meaning the removal needed to be approached with extra care from the outset.

Overhead powerlines: Working close to live powerlines added a significant safety consideration throughout the dismantling process.

Traffic management: Carrying out the work in publicly accessible areas meant temporary traffic lights were required to keep pedestrians and drivers safe.

Two separate sites: Coordinating the removal across two locations in Billingshurst and Slinfold required careful planning and scheduling.

Outcome

Both ash trees were successfully dismantled and removed, with no disruption to traffic or nearby properties. The removal eliminated the hazard posed by the two trees, and the job was carried out efficiently thanks to the lorry-mounted grapple saw used to dismantle them safely.

Traffic was managed throughout with temporary lights in place across both sites, and the works were carried out near live powerlines without incident, keeping the surrounding area safe from start to finish.
